New Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS)
The Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) will replace the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) on 1 July 2020 as the new national regulator of the importation and manufacture of industrial chemicals in Australia.
All businesses that import and/or manufacture relevant industrial chemicals or products that contain industrial chemicals for commercial purposes must be currently registered under the NICNAS scheme.
It should be noted that Cosmetics and Soaps are considered products that contain industrial chemicals for commercial purposes and therefore importers of Cosmetics and Soaps should already be registered under NICNAS.
Glues and Adhesives is another product area that falls with the scheme and therefore requires the importers to be registered.
Those businesses that are currently registered under NICNAS will be automatically transferred to AICIS.
Details of the new AICIS scheme and the transitional arrangements from NICNAS can be found at https://www.nicnas.gov.au/New-scheme-1-July-2020
