BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUG (BMSB)
The department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) recently held information sessions on the threat of the BMSB.
For our customers we would like to bring to your attention preliminary details of this agricultural pest as imports of certain products from the above nominated countries will be affected if you have not addressed the BMSB issue.
BMSB season dates are 1st September 2018 to 30th April 2018.
DAWR has advised that the targeted high risk commodities that will require mandatory fumigation offshore are;
- Break bulk, including vehicles, machinery and equipment
- Bricks, tiles, ceramics, steel, stone and cement
- Goods likely to have been stored in a manner that provides access for the BMSB
Important to note the goods detailed above if not fumigated prior to export and by an approved fumigator will not be allowed to enter Australia, they will be required to be re exported.
Targeted risk products that might be directed for increased onshore fumigation are;
- Chemicals, chemical products, salt, minerals, fertilisers
- Wood pulp, printed matter, straw, paper, cardboard
- Plastics, wadding, tyres
Although these products are not noted as mandatory offshore treatment being required consideration should be given to having the shipment fumigated by an approved provider prior to export.
Exempted goods;
- Fresh produce (inc nursery stock and plants)
- Live animals
- Food for human consumption (inc beverages)
- Seeds for sowing
- Registered pharmaceuticals
An issue from last season particularly for goods being shipped ex Italy is that many were either not fumigated correctly or were not fumigated by an approved provider, DAWR will be making available a list of approved providers from each affected country, when available please share these with your suppliers if you do have goods subject to the BMSB.
Given the significant threat that the BMSB has on our agricultural market a lot of emphasis is being placed on compliance of managing the threat, you will need to allow a little longer in your supply chain to ensure you are treating the goods correctly and with an approved provider.
If you have any doubts if your products are affected by the BMSB please reach out to one of the Southern Cross Cargo team at the time of placing your order with the supplier, the earlier notice we can have the better we can assist with managing what might be required
